How to Identify and Correctly Choose YJV, YJY, and VV Cables?
With increasingly stringent global requirements for environmental protection, safety, and power grid upgrades, cable selection in the power engineering market is no longer solely based on price. While YJV(Cu/XLPE/PVC power cable), YJY(Cu/XLPE/PE power cable), and VV(Cu/PVC/PVC power cable) cables differ by only one character in their names in Chinese, they represent fundamental differences in materials, manufacturing processes, temperature resistance ratings, and application scenarios.
To see the differences between the three more intuitively, we have organized various indicators into the following table:
ⅠConstruction Differences
| Dimension of Comparison |
YJV |
YJY |

II. Deep Analysis of Core Differences: Performance and Market Cost Logic
❶. Materials and Performance
YJV & YJY vs. VV: The former two use cross-linked polyethylene as insulation. This material increases the maximum operating temperature of the cable from 70°C to 90°C. This means that, for the same cross-sectional area, YJV and YJY have a larger current carrying capacity and superior physical properties.
Special Features of YJY: It is the most “green” of the three. Because the sheath is made of polyethylene (PE), it does not produce harmful halogen gases when burned. Furthermore, it has stronger low-temperature resistance, so it can be used normally in environments as low as -40°C.
❷ Price and Market Logic: Cost Dynamics
Theoretically, YJY cables have a slightly higher sheath cost, making them the most expensive of the three. Although VV cables have lower performance and should generally be slightly cheaper, in actual production, because YJV has become the mainstream (mass production reduces costs), the cost of small-batch production of VV may actually be higher. Therefore, the prices of VV and YJV are basically the same.
III. How to Choose the Right Cable Based on Your Needs
❶ Conventional Industrial and Urban Power Grids: YJV is the preferred choice. It is suitable for urban underground power grids, power plant outlet lines, etc. It is currently the most cost-effective and widely used mainstream model, gradually replacing traditional VV cables.
❷ Densely Populated and Enclosed Spaces: YJY is recommended for subway stations, large shopping malls, high-rise buildings, etc. Its environmentally friendly and non-toxic characteristics greatly ensure life safety in the event of an accident.
❸ Budget-Sensitive Simple Industrial Environments: VV is optional. It is only recommended for industrial sites with low voltage requirements, constant ambient temperature, and limited budgets.
The market is currently transitioning from traditional VV cables to high-performance YJV cables, and in densely populated public places, environmentally friendly YJY cables are becoming an indispensable standard configuration.
