1300 MWh! Huawei Won the World’s Largest Energy Storage Project!

        On October 16, the 2021 Global Digital Energy Summit was held in Dubai. At the meeting, Huawei Digital Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and Shandong Electric Power Construction Third Engineering Co., Ltd. successfully signed the Saudi Red Sea New City Energy Storage Project. The two parties will work together to help Saudi Arabia build global clean energy And a green economy center.

        It is reported that the energy storage scale of the project reaches 1,300MWh, which is by far the world’s largest energy storage project and the world’s largest off-grid energy storage project.

        According to reports, the Red Sea New City Energy Storage Project is a key project included in Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” plan. The developer is ACWA Power and the EPC contractor is Shandong Power Construction No. 3 Company. Red Sea New City, located on the coast of the Red Sea, is also known as the “new generation city”. In the future, the entire city’s electricity will come entirely from new energy sources.

Energy storage industry ushered in “dual” benefits

        Industry insiders have the opinion that: “Energy storage is the backbone of the two trillion-dollar racetracks-left to support clean energy such as “heat, electricity, and hydrogen”, and right to power batteries and new energy vehicles.”

        After more than ten years of development, the energy storage industry is currently in the early stages of commercialization and large-scale applications. However, the country and the market have given consistent feedback from their respective perspectives, that is, “unanimously optimistic about the energy storage market.” This means that the energy storage industry is ushering in a “dual” benefit.

        First, favorable policies. Huawei pointed out that as of now, 137 countries around the world have committed to the goal of “carbon neutrality”. This will be an unprecedented large-scale global cooperation action, and will also give rise to a wide range of investment opportunities in the fields of renewable energy and green infrastructure.

        As we all know, the main way to achieve the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality is to develop renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and wind power to replace the fossil energy. Photovoltaic and wind power are typical intermittent energy sources and must rely on energy storage. When photovoltaic and wind energy are sufficient, electrical energy is stored, and the stored power is released when needed.

        It can be seen that the strategic significance of the energy storage industry to global development is self-evident.

        On July 23, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration officially issued the “Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of New Energy Storage”, which raised issues such as clarifying the status of the independent market entity of the new energy storage and improving the price mechanism of the new energy storage; at the same time, it is clear that By 2025, the transformation of new energy storage from the initial stage of commercialization to large-scale development will be realized, and the installed capacity will reach more than 30 million kilowatts. It means that the energy storage market is about to usher in a new round of development opportunities.

        This is the country’s latest policy on the energy storage industry.

        Second, the market is optimistic. CCTV Finance previously reported that according to incomplete statistics, in the first half of 2021, the scale of new domestic new energy storage installed capacity exceeded 10GW, a year-on-year increase of over 600%. And the number of projects with a larger installed scale reached 34, 8.5 times that of last year, covering 12 provinces across the country.

        The installed capacity of 10GW shows that the energy storage industry is developing rapidly. However, compared with the above-mentioned target of “installation of new energy storage capacity of more than 30 million kilowatts by 2025”, there is still a three-fold gap and huge room for growth.

        CICC pointed out that the global electrochemical energy storage market is vast. In the context of a clear carbon neutrality goal, the world has accelerated the transition from energy supply to clean energy, driving the rapid growth of demand for energy storage as a supporting technology for the grid. In overseas markets, driven by policies and high returns brought about by market-oriented power mechanisms, energy storage projects have achieved better economic efficiency.

        CICC estimates that by 2030, global electrochemical energy storage shipments will reach 864GWh, corresponding to the battery pack market space of 885.7 billion yuan, which has more than 30 times the growth space compared to 2020.

        Guosheng Securities said that energy storage is expected to usher in rapid growth. Since the second half of 2021, under the background of accelerating energy structure transformation, domestic energy storage policies have been gradually implemented. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s energy storage industry will begin to grow rapidly. By 2025, the installed capacity of new energy storage will increase from the end of 2020. About 3GW increased to 30GW, realizing the transformation of new energy storage from the initial stage of commercialization to large-scale development.

        CITIC Securities predicts that benefiting from the continuous strengthening of policy protection, the accelerated construction of new power systems, the improvement of the power trading system and the continuous decline in costs, the energy storage industry will usher in a period of rapid development during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period.

New energy companies rush into the energy storage track

        When it comes to new energy companies, Tesla has to be said. In addition to electric vehicles, renewable energy is also one of Tesla’s important business areas. The latter includes solar energy and energy storage. Currently, there are mainly three products: Powerwall (household energy storage batteries), Powerpack (commercial energy products), and Megapack (commercial energy products).

        Among them, Megapack can store up to 3mwh per unit, which is known as one of the largest energy storage systems in the market. Since its launch, Megapack has won many large projects, including Pacific natural gas and power company, French renewable energy company neoen, Japan electric power company and other enterprises.

        In addition, Tesla previously stated that the Megapack, which was priced at US$1 million for corporate sales, was officially launched on Tesla’s US official website on July 20 this year, and its production capacity has been sold out by the end of 2022.

        CATL: In terms of energy storage converter and system integration, energy storage at the source network, energy storage EPC, commercial energy storage, and energy storage battery technology, CATL has opened up the entire industry chain through joint ventures and equity participation.

        According to the semi-annual report, in the first half of 2021, it shipped a number of 100 MWh-level projects. The operating income of the energy storage system was 4.693 billion yuan, ranking in the power battery system (revenue 30.451 billion yuan) and lithium battery materials ( After the revenue of 4.986 billion yuan), however, the energy storage system of the Ningde era has the highest gross profit margin and the strongest revenue growth.

        On August 31, CATL and JinkoSolar signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Ningde, Fujian. According to the agreement, CATL and JinkoSolar will promote integrated solar storage solutions in the energy storage business, the entire county, the cooperation of optical storage in the global market, and the promotion of carbon neutrality in the upstream and downstream of the industry chain, based on the combination of innovative optical storage architecture and system integration solutions. A full range of strategic cooperation intentions have been reached in various fields such as research and development.

        This is the latest development of CATL in the field of energy storage.

        It is worth noting that on July 29, CATL officially released the first-generation sodium-ion battery, and the lithium-sodium hybrid battery pack also made its debut at the press conference. The target market for sodium batteries is energy storage, and sodium batteries are expected to further lower the cost of energy storage batteries.

        BYD: At the 14th SNEC exhibition in 2020, BYD will unveil its new grid-level energy storage product BYD Cube. It is understood that BYD Cube covers an area of only 16.66 square meters and has an energy storage capacity of up to 2.8MWh. Compared with the 40-foot standard container energy storage system in the industry, this product has increased the energy density per unit area by more than 90%, and is the first to support 1300V DC voltage, matching high-voltage converters of different brands.

        BYD’s energy storage business is mainly concentrated in overseas markets. For example, in Germany, BYD’s market share is as high as 19%, second only to German battery manufacturer Sonnen’s 20%, ranking second.

        More than that, it is understood that BYD’s blade batteries will be used in energy storage products in the future.

        Yiwei Lithium Energy: It has previously stated that the energy storage business has already cooperated with Huawei and the tower. Since the beginning of this year, it is also accelerating its deployment in the energy storage market.

        In early August, Yiwei lithium energy announced that it would join hands with Jingmen high tech Zone to build a 30gwh energy storage and power battery project, specifically a 15gwh lithium iron phosphate battery project for logistics vehicles and household energy storage and a 15gwh ternary battery project for passenger vehicles.

        On June 10, Yiwei lithium energy announced that its subsidiary Yiwei power plans to sign a joint venture agreement with Linyang energy, and both parties will invest in the establishment of a new joint venture. The joint venture will invest no more than RMB 3 billion to build an energy storage battery project with an annual output of 10gwh.

        Guoxuan Hi-Tech: The company’s energy storage business has an earlier layout. In September 2016, the company officially established an energy storage business unit to enter the energy storage field. In recent years, the company’s energy storage business has developed rapidly. It has cooperated with companies and units such as Huawei, Tower, China Power Investment Corporation, Eleventh Institute of Electronics, Shanghai Electric, State Grid, Jiyuan Software, and Xuji Group in energy storage projects and related businesses.

        In addition, Guoxuan Hi-Tech also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with JinkoSolar two days before the Ningde era. According to the agreement, the two parties will jointly carry out the cooperative R&D, production and sales of “photovoltaic + energy storage” systems. Carrying out innovative and multi-dimensional strategic cooperation in areas such as charging equipment and the promotion of the entire county of optical storage to jointly promote the in-depth cooperation of “photovoltaic + energy storage”.

        According to reports, the two sides have already carried out preliminary cooperation in the fields of industrial energy storage in the United States and household energy storage in Japan, and the cooperation foundation is sound.

        Xinwangda: Relying on mature lithium battery technology, it provides customers with “one-stop” energy storage system solutions. Up to now, the company has participated in nearly 100 energy storage projects worldwide and won the “China Top Ten Energy Storage Integrator” award.

        It is worth mentioning that Xinwangda is one of Huawei’s suppliers, providing Huawei with batteries and battery packs.

        So far, among the five lithium battery companies introduced above, there are three that have a cooperative relationship with Huawei, namely: Yiwei Lithium Energy, Guoxuan High-tech, and Xinwangda.

        In addition, battery companies including Penghui Energy, Vision Technology, BAK, Lishen, and Ruipu Energy are all deploying significantly in the field of energy storage.
