Increase power generation, intelligent robots help photovoltaic stable income generation

In order to generate electricity from solar cells, photovoltaic people have spent a lot of money and effort on improving the conversion efficiency of the cells. Nowadays, whether it is the mainstream PERC battery or the heterojunction battery technology that has not yet been used on a large scale, its conversion efficiency has been significantly improved compared to a few years ago.

However, this is only theoretical data. The use environment of photovoltaics is relatively harsh, especially centralized photovoltaics, which are usually arranged in dry areas with less rainfall. Although the sunshine time is long, they will also encounter the trouble of wind and sand, and there is not enough rain washes off the dust, and the dust adheres to the surface of the panel, which will reduce the power generation and affect the income of investors. According to a large number of studies, the accumulation of dust on solar panels will reduce battery efficiency by 7% to 40%. Cleaning them also requires manpower and water, which adds to the cost.

Therefore, cleaning up solar panels is an important part of stabilizing photovoltaic revenue generation and also the key to photovoltaic operation and maintenance. When the total installed capacity of photovoltaics has reached a surprising number, the traditional manual cleaning has been withdrawn from the stage, replaced by robot cleaning, and many technology companies have been in this field for many years.

After continuous development, the solar panel cleaning robot has better performance, not only can quickly clean the panel without dead spots. Some companies have also developed cleaning robots that do not require water for centralized photovoltaic systems deployed in arid areas, and the electricity required is also from photovoltaics, achieving self-sufficiency, environmental protection and high efficiency in a small area.

Ecoppia is a company established in Israel last year. It has invested 100 panel cleaning robots in the Ketura Sun solar array in the Negev Desert, Israel. Microfiber shock absorbers are used to generate airflow to remove the dust surface from the surface of the panel. The system robots move vertically or horizontally on the panels for about one and a half hours every night, and they get power from their own solar panels. The system can be managed remotely, even through a smart phone.

CEO Eran Meller said the company is gradually expanding, focusing on markets in the Middle East, India and Latin America. By early next year, the company will clean 5 million solar panels every month. “As we said, if you can use it in the Middle East, you can arrange it anywhere. Our starting point may be the most challenging place on the planet.” Mailer said, referring to Sandstorms across Saudi Arabia and Jordan are a disaster for the Cordura solar array.

According to Mailer, a 300-megawatt solar power plant may cost more than 5 million U.S. dollars to clean, and at the same time, in terms of energy production, the loss due to dust cover is at least 3.6 million U.S. dollars. Mailer said that for that scale, the cost of installing the Ecoppia system is about $1.1 million, which is a little more than his estimated annual loss of regular cleaning programs, but the former can pay for itself within 18 months. No need for clean water also means that 110 million gallons (420 million liters) of water can be saved within ten years.

The U.S. solar panel cleaning market will reach $1 billion by 2026

According to a new study by Global Market Insights, by 2026, the US solar panel cleaning market is expected to increase to US$1 billion.

Global Market Insights, headquartered in Delaware, said that more and more end-users choose to adopt clean energy and the introduction of smart solar panel cleaning technology will stimulate product adoption.

The company said that the residential solar panel cleaning market surpassed 48 million U.S. dollars (US) in 2019, and is expected to have a compound annual growth rate of more than 8% by 2026.

The report said that favorable regulatory norms, rapid technological development, subsidies, incentives and friendly building regulations have all helped the development of the solar industry in recent years. There will be more and more cleaning requirements for electrostatic solar panels, especially in desert areas where water is scarce.
