What Can You Plug into a Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Connector?

For decades, car cigarette lighter socket connectors have been the main product of automobiles. In the past, it actually contained a working lighter designed for lighting. However, it is now being reused as an accessory socket to power phones, seat heaters and other electronic devices. Before you plug anything into the car, it is important to better understand how it works.

Application of 12V Male Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Plug Connector to DC

What is the Difference Between DC and AC Power?

The car cigarette lighter socket connector, also known as the 12V accessory socket, provides 12 volt Direct Current (DC) power. The function of a DC power source is very different from that of an Alternating Current (AC) power source that is output from an electrical outlet in a home. Alternating Current flows in alternating directions multiple times per second, while Direct Current always flows in one direction.

Different applications have different power requirements. Solar cells, LED bulbs, and electronic devices that contain rechargeable batteries, such as laptops, mobile phones, and tablets, all use DC power. Electrical appliances that need to be plugged directly into a power source to work require AC power. Examples of AC power applications include hair dryers, televisions, and microwave ovens. When using your car to power an application, the type of power source it requires will determine what you need to run it.

How to Use a Car to Power DC Devices?

Devices that run on DC power can use your car’s power without having to convert it first. This is usually done by using a 12V car adapter plug, a large male plug with a center pin and metal contacts on both sides. Many DC devices, such as CB radios, some GPS devices and DVD players, are equipped with hard-wired 12V DC plugs designed for automotive use. If your device is not equipped with a hard-wired 12V DC plug, you can choose a DC power adapter with the same function. There are even splitter adapters available, allowing you to power multiple devices simultaneously from the same outlet.

If your car is not equipped with its own USB socket, you can also choose a 12V USB adapter. They plug into the accessory socket of your car just like the adapter mentioned above, but have a USB socket that can be used to charge mobile phones and tablets.

What is a Power Inverter?

The power inverter is a power adapter that can convert the 12 volt DC power output from the car into 120 volt AC power. This allows you to use the power supply in your car to power things that are traditionally powered from a wall outlet. Anything that normally doesn’t have a USB cable needs a power inverter to consume the car’s electricity. Examples include: cookware, power tools, and televisions.

What is the Difference Between Modified and Pure Sine Wave Inverters?

There are two different types of power inverters, improved and pure sine wave inverters. No need to be too technical, the modified sine wave inverter is the older of the two. They are more affordable and are usually best suited for simple applications such as motors or fans, but not suitable for electronic timers, digital clocks or other precision electronic devices.

For more advanced applications, such as microwave ovens, battery chargers, and audio and video equipment, pure sine wave inverters are a better choice. Since all devices are designed to use pure sine waves, this type of inverter will enable electronic devices to work at full capacity. Pure sine wave inverters can also help protect your equipment by detecting rapid changes in power output and correcting it to a safe output.

Does DC Power Supply Device Need a Power Inverter?

DC power supply device does not require a power inverter to charge the DC equipment in the car, but it is still recommended. When you plug the USB cable and adapter into your car, there is a risk that the cable may malfunction and may cause damage to the device over time. If you want to ensure that your equipment will not be damaged, it is wise to use a pure sine wave power inverter to help protect it.

How to Choose the Right Inverter?

When purchasing a power inverter, you need to look at the operating (continuous) power and starting surge power of the equipment that you plan to connect to the car. Some applications require higher startup surges in the first few seconds of operation before stabilizing to standard operating power. Be sure to choose your inverter based on the total starting surge power of the equipment you plan to use. This can be calculated by adding the normal operating power to the additional startup surge power.

What Does a Power Inverter’s Surge Power Measure?

Many power inverters have surge power ratings, although this rating can be a bit misleading. Generally, the surge power rating only measures the surge power of the inverter for less than one full second. Electrical appliances with high start-up surge power usually last longer. Unless the surge power rating of the inverter specifically states that its duration exceeds five seconds, the surge power rating should not be used to judge its starting surge power capacity. In this case, you need to check the continuous power rating.
