        IP (INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION) protection level system is drafted by IEC (INTERNATIONAL ELECTRO-TECHNICAL COMMISSION). The structure of a waterproof connector is generally divided into: metal contact conductor and shell.

The difference between metal and plastic (nylon TA66) shells:

1. Electrical performance:

        Rated voltage, rated current, contact resistance, insulation resistance, etc. are in accordance with the specified standard values. This point is the same as the metal and plastic housing.

2. Mechanical life:

        The mechanical life of a waterproof connector refers to the life of the number of times of plugging and unplugging, and the industry-standard usually specifies 500 to 1000 times. When the specified mechanical life is reached, the contact resistance, insulation resistance, and withstand voltage of the waterproof connector should not exceed the specified standard values. There is not much difference between the metal shell and the plastic shell.

3. Terminal connection mode:

        The terminal connection mode refers to the connection mode between the hardware contacts of the male and female connectors of the waterproof connector and the wire and cable. The metal is the same as the plastic case. Termination methods can be divided into five types: welding, crimping, winding, piercing, and screw.

4. Environmental parameters:

        Environmental parameters mainly include ambient temperature, humidity, sudden temperature changes, atmospheric pressure, and corrosive environment. The environment in which the waterproof connector is used, stored, and transported has a significant impact on its performance. Therefore, the corresponding metal shell must be selected according to the actual environmental conditions, which is better than plastic.

        Comprehensive analysis, except for the need for the connector to have a shielding function, there is little difference in performance between metal and nylon TA66 plastic shells. Compared with the metal shell, the cost of plastic is lower, and the structure is more reasonable.

 

Precautions for Waterproof Connectors

1. The waterproof connector should avoid strong hitting or falling to avoid damaging the internal structure and affecting the sealing performance.
2. When the waterproof connector is in a separated state, it should be equipped with a protective cover or other methods to prevent dust. If it is used for a long time, it should be insured between the plug and the socket.
3. When cleaning the waterproof connector, you can use a silk cloth dipped in anhydrous ethyl alcohol, and it can be used again after drying, and some chemical agents cannot be used, such as acetone and other chemical agents.
4. The waterproof connector is fixed and positioned by threaded connection to be clamped by the wire harness and other occasions also need to use anti-loosening equipment.
5. When the connected plug and socket are waterproof connectors without positioning shells, in order to ensure that the fixed plug and socket can be aligned, the plug and socket should be fixed in a difficult-to-fit state.
6. When using a waterproof connector, avoid loosening of the tail accessories and force damage to the cable core to prevent performance from being affected.
